Music video analysis

Beyonce - Single ladies

The main effects of this video is visual as it’s all about Beyonce dancing around for the whole video, this works for Beyonce because her genre of music is pop which is quite lively so i think that’s why dancing for the whole video works. There is a slight narrative to it as she talks about a wedding ring which by the end of the video there is a shot with her and the wedding ring on her finger. The structure of the video is live, it’s a performance video, and there is no narrative or concept-based structure to it.

This is my favourite shot throughout the whole video because it’s

the only one that stands out to be different as the rest is mainly a
long shot to show their full bodies dancing around. This shot is good as it shows a close up of her face and she is showing the ring on her finger which is the narrative behind the video. This is also a good shot because it’s one of the only times Beyonce is the focal point of the shot whereas the rest of the time she blends in with the dancers.

The mise-en-scene is very basic, there is only one prop used throughout the whole video and it is the metal contraption on Beyonce’s hand, however with there being no other props used this draws your attention to the hand. The way Beyonce and her dancers are dressed is exactly the same they are all in black leotards with a big quiff in their hair and black heels, by wearing black they are fitting in with the colour scheme of the video which is black and white.

The edits in the video are mainly fades however sometimes they are done in a special way, in parts of the video they have a spot light on them dancing and for the edit they light shines really bright and eventually fills the screen then when it dyes back down its a change of scene.

I think the video was a success for Beyonce because most of her other videos although she dances in all her videos she has never made a video like this before so it was a risk making it also i think people will associate some of the dance moves to the song when they listen to it. However i do think after a while the video can get boring i think this could be because they stay in the same plain room for the whole video so it gets a bit repetitive.

The video doesn’t relate to any other video’s however when Beyonce released the song she was sending out a new image of herself and the glove on her hand relates to this look.

From this video i think you can get quite a wide target audience ranging from the ages of 8 to middle 40’s because young girls of the age 8 to 17 will like it because most young girls like to dance so they can relate to it but also older girls and women from the ages of 18 to middle 40’s will like it too because as 18 is the legal age for clubbing and the song is well suited to it so the dancing is once again targeting the female audience. Most men are also targeted as Beyonce is known for being good looking men will find her attractive
.
