Audience research analysis

Analysis

Our results show us that the member of the target audience prefer a video that has a narrative based but also a high majority also like a performance based so we have put both of these attributes in the music video so it is a mixture even though a small majority like to see concept based the majority is higher for the other two which mean more people will be interested in the music video and more likely to watch it. We thought that the pace of the video should most defiantly match the pace of the song we also asked our audience this to see what they thought and we got back that at least over half thinks that the videos pace should match the songs pace this is so the video doesn’t look random and weird and it all flows. To have a certain tone to the song will make the video more interesting and more watchable for the public, our results show us that the public like a humorous tone with a slight bit of seriousness so this will be added in o make the video attracted to the public eye. Intertexuality is an important part of music as the theorist Andrew Godwin says the key features to a music video include a reference to inertexuality either from a TV programme or even another music video we asked our audience if this attracts them to a music video and over half said that it did attract them to watch a music video. Filming is an important part of making a music video to get al the shots correct etc but we asked the public which they think is the most important element of the filming process and they said that camera shots was the most important element we took this into account and have put some killer shots into the video to attract the public. Florescent adolescent came up on top to the most favourite music video done by the artic monkeys so we looked at this video and have tried to look at key features of the video and we also did the theory behind this video.

Band video analysis

Arctic Monkeys - 'Crying Lightning'

The whole video for this song is set on this one boat and it is all performance. There are a lot of visual effects used because you can tell they aren’t out at sea however it still looks realistic, with the grey colour of the cold sea and the sky is all cloudy with a sunset/sunrise.

The structure of the video is all about the performance, the live act of the band playing however I think that there is also concept based in it because it has all evolved around the one idea of the boat out at sea.

There isn’t many great shots in the video but I think the best on is when a wave hits the side of the boat and from the ripple in the water that it makes Alex turner (the singer) suddenly appears rising out the sea, this is a great shot because the whole video up until there is just the band playing so it adds something different to the video. Another great shot is when they have all rose out of the sea, a bit like ghosts as they are transparent, playing their instruments the drummer isn’t actually playing drums they are barrels which fits into the theme of out at sea, and every time he hits the drums a flash of lightning strikes.

The mise-en-scene of the video the location is all in one place, in the middle of nowhere out at sea. For the props the boat is the main one is the boat and the bands instruments but another is the lights on the boat, they aren’t on throughout the video but when Alex rises out of the sea they turn on just while he plays then they go off again.

I don’t really like this video but I do think it shows career progression of the band because it’s for the launch of their new album ‘Humbug’ and because the songs on the album are a bit different to what they normally produce then it’s a good idea to change the style of video made. Also it was directed by Richard Ayoade who directed their video for ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ and that video was also a success.

Arctic Monkeys - 'Flourescent Adolescent'

I think this video is about growing up, you get this impression from some of the lyrics by repeating the word ‘remember’ quite a lot. In the video i think the narrative is the men are dressed as clowns just like when they were younger only they are dealing with adult things like gangs and fighting, also in the middle of the song they go back in time to show little children dressed in the same clown suits only they are happy unlike the older men.

The video is a mixture of narrative and concept based because the narrative of the song is these men ‘getting old’ and unhappy and the concept based is the fact that it’s based around a rundown building and the one idea of age. The visual effects of this video is as it’s a continuous story of events you are made to keep watching to see what will happen at the end.

There is quite a few great shots one of them being a medium/long shot of the side of a car going through cardboard boxes through a fence but when the car hits the boxes it is in slow motion so you can see the impact off the speed. Another great shot is at the end when you expect that the car will hit the man but instead he gets out a lighter and drops it and the trail of petrol on the floor blows the car up.

The mise-en-scene of this video is it is set in what looks like a rundown building or car park block which also links to the theme of age as the building old representing the men whereas at one point it would have been up and in use. The car is a major prop in the video as it is used throughout to carry out stunts along with the river. The choice of costume is strange but it fits into the narrative of the song.

I think this video is a success because it’s easy to understand the narrative because it fits in with the lyrics and also it is just a bit of a weird video which to me makes it stand out from some of their other videos.

You can see career progression in this video because as its from the second album they obviously had a bit more money compared to their first music video, i bet that you look good on the dancefloor, which was filmed on set of the mtv show ‘on the couch with Zane Low’.

Video analysis of a similar artist

The Strokes - 'Reptilia'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM2Ssne97ek

The title of this song ‘reptilia’ links to the part of the brain called the ‘Reptilian complex’ which deals with our emotions of love and hate, from this i think the song is about a mixture of emotions that he has experienced.

The whole video is a performance all in one room therefore the structure of the video is live also it has a lot of quick cuts to keep up with the fast pace of the song.

Even though the video is just performance there is still quite a lot of good shots, my favourite being it starts off with the neck of two guitars then splits to the three guitars and the singer, in four different blocks, all playing along i think it looks really effective. Another great shot is a foot playing the guitar from the front the foot isn’t totally in focus and it adds a slower pace to the song for a second which i think is really effective.

For the mise-en-scene you can’t really tell where the location is because the video consists mainly of close ups, the only props used are the bands instruments. They are all dressed casually in shirt/jacket and jeans however one man has a formal suit on making him stand out. There isn’t and special effects used throughout the video.

I don’t really like this video as there isn’t really anything happening however i do think the fast edits do help make the video better. The video doesn’t really show career progression of the band considering it is from their second album.

I think the strokes are a similar band to the arctic monkeys because although they are from America they fit in the same genre of the arctic monkeys which is alternative rock.

Initial ideas

Arctic Monkeys - 'Pretty Visitors'

An average workman riding to work on his bike on his daily root to work. On that route he usually goes through some wood. During that short ride through the wood comes across a group of cloaked people. This cloaked group are the ‘pretty visitors’ but the twist of the video is that they are not that pretty, they are ugly and messed up. They reveal their faces at the end of the song and the aver workman is confused and joins the group at the end.During the song he follows the group wondering what they are doing. When the song kicks off near the end, the group turns round and the man is caught. The man changes into a ‘pretty visitor’ and goes of with the group into the wood.

Summer Homework - music DVD covers

Slipknot - Welcome to the Neighbourhood

The title on the front cover is a large font and also the actual font used is the same used on CD’s and posters, this theme is continues on the back and side of the DVD cover. The text ‘welcome to our neighbourhood’ is all in capitals and the font looks like something you would see in a horror film, this fits in with the rock genre. The main text on the whole cover is white, creating a colour scheme.

There is three images on the whole cover, on the front cover the image is of the video album, it takes up at least half although it is a big image it is the title that catches your eye as the white contrasts with the dull background whereas the image blends in, this suggests the image isn’t as important, however on the back it is the image that stands out the most as the red contrasts with the background. There is a small image of the DVD in the bottom left corner, this is the same image that is on the front cover.

There is a bar code on the back, this is a key convention of any product also the parental advisory logo on the front cover is a convention of this DVD cover.

The colour scheme of this DVD cover is white black and red these are quite dull and boring colours however they do fit in with the stereotype of people who like rock as they wear a lot of black.

The band are all wearing white masks, this is portraying a very rock image of themselves as you wouldn’t see that on an R’n’B cover!

Summer Homework - music DVD covers

Oasis - Definitely Maybe

There are no real images over this DVD cover but there is two cartoon/painted images of the band, it is a creative image that is difficult to understand, they are wearing their ordinary clothes in both images its almost capturing them in the moment, doing what they normally do for example one of them is sat at the back watching telly.

This DVD is more narrative than performance because it was release as a tenth anniversary of the song definitely maybe showing a documentary about the album and interviews. It also had a bit performance because on the second disc there was the definitely maybe album.

For the mise-en-scene the room is like a real living room because of the props, everything in the room, the fire place, the sofa, the painting, the wine glasses and telly are all props that help make the image. Although the image has been painted it looks like it has been edited so it has a greeny yellow tint to it. On the front cover there is the ‘Oasis’ logo which is a signature thing for the band as it is also used on CD’s and posters, the title of the DVD is also in the front cover is the title which is white, this creates a colour scheme of black and white for the cover.

Summer Homework - music DVD covers

Justin Timberlake - Futuresex/Lovesounds live

The main conventions of this DVD cover are a main image of the artist on the front, the name of the artist in big writing, a bar code on the back, the parental advisory logo and the songs numbered in chronological order.

The colour scheme for this cover is black red and white. As the background is plain black this makes Justin and the songs stand out as there is a big contrast between the black and white. The colours used are very masculine however Justin doesn’t really have a masculine singing voice so he could have used these colours to show he can also be masculine. The red strip near the bottom of the cover links to his song lovestoned in the video consisted of continuous lines like that, by doing this he has added a theme from his video also the audience can link to it.

There is only on image on the whole cover, this shows that the DVD’s all about Justin and for the fact he is like glowing emphasises it even more, however as the albums got ‘future’ in the title he is maybe trying to make it look futuristic to match with his music, also as it is him performing live the image of him is like an action shot of him performing.

Summer Homework - music DVD covers

The Beatles – Let it Be

The conventions of a DVD cover i have found is there is always a logo showing its a DVD. The title is always big and bold so it stands out and there is always at least one main image on the cover. The list of songs always goes in chorological order according to numbers, but never in a random order.

The colour scheme for this cover consists of two main colours white, orange and black, this runs throughout the whole cover. The colours are quite dull however the orange text contrasts against the white background making the text stand out. On the front cover with the background being plain white makes the four images stand out making them the main focal point of the front cover showing it’s all about the band.

There are four main images on the front cover, one for each member of the band. They are all close ups of their faces’ and look like they have been contrasted to make their faces stand out more. The images don’t give much away about the band themselves but because they are such a famous band they don’t really need to have a really good creative image as people already know how good they are. They have also used the same images on the front cover as they have down the side of the DVD box, they might have done this to add a theme to the cover. The image on the back of the cover looks a bit like a family portrait, the fact that they have all got their hair cut in similar ways could be portraying that they are like brothers to each other, also they are all wearing suits which compared to the front cover which looks like them having fun, this one shows they can also be serious as a band furthermore the size of the image takes up just over half of the side, they have done this to highlight the band and the will be what catches the audiences attention.

The title ‘The Beatles Let it Be’ is printed on all three sides of the cover also showing a recurring theme, also the text is all in capitals making it stand out. The font used is like their ‘signature’ font which they have also used on other CD’s and DVD covers, they might have done this as some people could recognise that its them just by the font used. The text on the back cover is very small probably around a size 8, this could show that because the texts not very easy to read it’s not important as like earlier they are so well known most people would know their songs.

There are a lot of boxes used around text and images, this helps break it up separating the text from the images making it very easy on the eye. All of the images have a box or circle around them, I think these are highlighting the best parts of the cover, it’s the thing people will look at most and it also makes the cover look more interesting. There is a text box on the back of the cover to separate information about the DVD to the songs on the DVD, however by putting the box around the information shows you that’s what they want you to read first making it stand out. It’s almost as though they aren’t bothered about the songs on the disk as just by looking at the back they don’t stand out at all. The orange band all the way along the top adds colour to the cover but it’s also highlighting that it’s a ‘limited collection edition’ of the DVD showing for Beatles fans it is an important DVD.

Summer Homework - music DVD covers

Beyonce – B-day

There is one main image of Beyonce on the DVD cover, it is a medium shot of Beyonce looking straight forward, looking at her audience whereas the image on the back she is looking up, in the direction of her songs directing the audience to look at what is on the DVD, for that reason the image on the front cover is a much stronger image.

Editing has been used on the images, the brightness and contrast has definitely been increased, this is done to make images stronger and better. For the mise-en-scene there are no props used, the setting is outdoors with the sky and trees behind her, she is wearing quite a lot of make-up. The only writing on the front is the artists name and the title of her DVD, these are in blue and white fitting in with the white top she is wearing. On the back of the DVD there is a bar code which is necessary for any product, all the writing is navy blue creating a colour scheme, the writing varies in size with the title being the biggest then the rest of the writing is the same size. Down the side of the DVD there is the name of the artist and the title following the blue and white colour scheme.

I think this is a very good DVD cover, although it is quite plain it has everything it needs and fits all the codes and conventions of a DVD cover.

The target audience for this DVD is mainly middle class girls from the ages of 17 to late 30’s this is because they are around the same age range as her so can relate to her lyrics and Beyonce herself. It can also relate to men because Beyonce is good looking so they could appeal to her that way.

Summer homework - music viedos

The Last Shadow Puppets – standing next to me

There are great visual effects throughout the video with the effect of lighting because as for most of the video it is just alex and Miles playing their guitars by experimenting with different light creating shadows makes the video more exciting.

The structure of the video consists of two separate performances, one being the band playing and singing and the other being a group of about ten women that appear half way through and do a little ballet dance, you aren’t expecting these women to appear also they are all wearing the same black and white stripy dress but with different coloured tights on, this adds colour to the video.

There is a few great shots, one of them being the screen shot, near the end of the video there is a man in the background with his filming camera and at the front of the shot is a screen with Miles singing on it. Another good shot is at the beginning of the video there is a medium close up of the two singers that tracks back to a long shot but as the camera is moving back the name of the band is printed on the floor so it looks a bit like credits.

For the mise-en-scene it is all shot in a London studio, the props used are the instruments, guitars and a tambourine, there is some globe like white lights dangling from the ceiling, the dancers are props also they all have their hair styled in a ponytail so it is hard to identify who is who. Alex and Miles are both wearing clean-cut formal suits making them look like you can tell they have a bit money, also their hairs are styled in a similar way this could be so they can portray a specific image of themselves.

I think the video is a success as it’s quite a slow pace song so it has a slow video to fit in with it. Also because they are already in bands themselves, Alex Turner from the arctic monkeys and Miles Kane from the last shadow puppets they have still showed dedication to the last shadow puppets as they released more than one video.

Michael Jackson – you rock my world

The video starts off with a long acting section before the song even begins, this bit of narrative sets the scene and informs the audience letting them understand what is happening, then eventually a black shadow lets the audience know Michael has arrived, its effective being a black shadow behind a screen because the song hasn’t actually started then as soon as the song starts an actual image of Michael appears, this is effective as its telling people the song has started, i think the whole performance at the start is done because otherwise you wouldn’t understand the performance in the actual song.

The structure of the video is a mixture of performance and narrative, although the performance is a part of the narrative it adds excitement to the video otherwise i don’t think you would even be able to tell that it is a music video.

I don’t actually like the music video i think it has too much performance during the song which draws your attention away from the actual song, however most of Michael jacksons songs have a lot of performance like this so i don’t think it affects the success of the video.

I like this shot on the right because in most music videos you usually see the front of the artist first however in this shot Michael is facing the other way round. The mise-en-scene is it’s set in an American bar, it is there throughout the whole video, the main props are the stage, where most of the dancing happens, bottles, as that is how the trouble starts when people start smashing bottles, also the paintings hanging on the wall signify the ‘tough’ men Michael has ‘messed’ with. There is a little special effect used when a fire is started as it shows some people fighting and escaping at the end perfectly fine.

In relation to other videos there seems to be a continuous theme where there is a big story before the song then halfway through the song it goes back to this story then there is always a little bit at the end to finish the song. You can see a bit of a progression of Michael Jackson in this video as compared to one of his first videos, thriller, you can see a bit more money has been spent on special effects and props.

I think most people would be interested in this music video for the dancing as that is one of the things Michael Jackson is known for, the people who would be most interested in the dancing is men and women around the ages of 20 up to late 40’s.

Oasis music video – Little by little

The narrative and visual effects work together to give a good effect, by this the lyrics match the story going on on the screen and this helps you understand the video. They use a cartoon effect throughout the whole video making it look as though it’s a story being retold from the past, like from someone’s memory tracing out the steps which is why it’s not a clear image.

The structure is a mixture of narrative and live because there is the guitar being played throughout the whole video and the story going on at the same time.

I think the shot above is a great shot because it fits in perfectly with the lyrics as when the car drives past it mentions ‘the wheels of your life’ but also the way its staged its showing the man going from this tiny little man growing back up to his normal size. The mise-en-scene is set outdoors in a busy street and at the end there is a bit of empty countryside, the main props in the video are extra people passing by, cars and a bus stop, these add reality to the video making it look like an everyday situation. Also the main colour scheme is black and white but to make some things stand out they are coloured in red making it look less dull.

I think the video is a success as it’s quite creative, it has both visual and narrative structure which makes it interesting. Also i think the detail put into the images used is very good, it makes it look like a lot of time and effort has been put into making the video.

As the video was made ten years after the band was created i think it shows progression of them as they hadn’t really done a video like this before, however i do think the only thing that has improved is the quality of the edits and images. As the album that little by little was released on is called ‘Heathen chemistry’ there is intertextuality to the video as the street the video they are in is called ‘Heathen street’.

I think there is an older target audience for this video, ranging from the ages of 17 to 50, this is because i think you have to understand the story of the song to get the video, this is represented by the story going on throughout the whole video.

Radiohead music video – No surprises

This music video was shot all in one take, this gives a visual effect as it keeps the audience interested to see what happens. The narrative behind it is about taking a life, the effect of this is you are left wondering whether the man will survive under the water for the whole song, which leaves you waiting in anticipation.

The video is all one performance so there isn’t really much structure apart from one man singing with his head in some sort of astronaut helmet, however all the lyrics are mirrored and scroll up the screen the whole time which adds narrative to the video as it’s like reading the story.
I think the whole time he is under the water for is a great shot, it makes you believe he was actually under that long however i researched it and it was actually filmed at high speed then slowed down for the actual video so he wasn’t actually under the water not breathing for a whole minute. The lyrics mirrored scrolling up is a bit of a special effect, it also adds movement to the video. There is no edits throughout the whole video, this is very unusual and makes this video different from most others.

I don’t think this music video is much of a success, although it is a great well known video i think the fact that there isn’t much happening makes it boring and hard to understand, however i think the whole concept of the water tank is brilliant as it is so different from all other music videos.

Most of Radiohead’s music videos are different compared to each other, they all have a different concept as the band progresses each video just gets better but different.

It’s hard to distinguish a target audience for this video as because the songs about taking a life not many people can relate to it however i do think it has an older target audience as it is quite hard to understand the video, i think the age range would be anywhere from 30 onwards and mainly men because as the bands all men they can relate to them but just from this video where you only see the singer they can just relate to him.

Music video analysis

Beyonce - Single ladies

The main effects of this video is visual as it’s all about Beyonce dancing around for the whole video, this works for Beyonce because her genre of music is pop which is quite lively so i think that’s why dancing for the whole video works. There is a slight narrative to it as she talks about a wedding ring which by the end of the video there is a shot with her and the wedding ring on her finger. The structure of the video is live, it’s a performance video, and there is no narrative or concept-based structure to it.

This is my favourite shot throughout the whole video because it’s

the only one that stands out to be different as the rest is mainly a
long shot to show their full bodies dancing around. This shot is good as it shows a close up of her face and she is showing the ring on her finger which is the narrative behind the video. This is also a good shot because it’s one of the only times Beyonce is the focal point of the shot whereas the rest of the time she blends in with the dancers.

The mise-en-scene is very basic, there is only one prop used throughout the whole video and it is the metal contraption on Beyonce’s hand, however with there being no other props used this draws your attention to the hand. The way Beyonce and her dancers are dressed is exactly the same they are all in black leotards with a big quiff in their hair and black heels, by wearing black they are fitting in with the colour scheme of the video which is black and white.

The edits in the video are mainly fades however sometimes they are done in a special way, in parts of the video they have a spot light on them dancing and for the edit they light shines really bright and eventually fills the screen then when it dyes back down its a change of scene.

I think the video was a success for Beyonce because most of her other videos although she dances in all her videos she has never made a video like this before so it was a risk making it also i think people will associate some of the dance moves to the song when they listen to it. However i do think after a while the video can get boring i think this could be because they stay in the same plain room for the whole video so it gets a bit repetitive.

The video doesn’t relate to any other video’s however when Beyonce released the song she was sending out a new image of herself and the glove on her hand relates to this look.

From this video i think you can get quite a wide target audience ranging from the ages of 8 to middle 40’s because young girls of the age 8 to 17 will like it because most young girls like to dance so they can relate to it but also older girls and women from the ages of 18 to middle 40’s will like it too because as 18 is the legal age for clubbing and the song is well suited to it so the dancing is once again targeting the female audience. Most men are also targeted as Beyonce is known for being good looking men will find her attractive
